Romania has signed a deal with Leonardo for the procurement of two new C-27J Spartan transport aircraft, increasing its fleet of the versatile airlifter to nine units. The acquisition was carried out through the EU-backed Security Action for Europe defense procurement initiative and funded by Romania’s Ministry of Internal Affairs.

Scheduled for delivery in 2029, the aircraft will be operated by the General Inspectorate of Aviation to support a wide range of missions, including disaster management, emergency services, civil protection operations, and multinational cooperation activities throughout Europe.

Leonardo stated that the aircraft will represent the latest-generation C-27J standard, offering improved capabilities while maintaining interoperability with Romania’s existing Spartan fleet. Upgrades include modern avionics, next-generation communications equipment, and aerodynamic enhancements aimed at improving fuel efficiency and mission effectiveness.

The aircraft will also feature flexible mission modules that can be rapidly installed or removed, allowing operators to switch between cargo transport, firefighting, medical evacuation, and hazardous-material response missions as required.

The order reflects Bucharest’s broader effort to reinforce national security and support collective defense initiatives amid heightened regional tensions. Romanian officials have increasingly emphasized the need for stronger NATO support along the alliance’s eastern border in response to security incidents linked to the conflict in neighboring Ukraine.
