Tokyo has committed $14.7 million to NATO’s Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List, a framework that enables partner countries and alliance members to fund the acquisition of critical US-produced military equipment for Ukraine. Although Japan has stated that its funding will be restricted to non-lethal military support, authorities have not revealed which systems or equipment will be procured under the program.

The move highlights Japan’s sustained backing of Ukraine and its growing defense cooperation with NATO amid evolving global security challenges.

Beyond direct financial contributions, Japan has steadily expanded cooperation with Ukraine in the defense sector. Reports indicate that the country has delivered roughly $15 billion in humanitarian assistance since the outbreak of the full-scale conflict and has pledged a further $3.5 billion in aid.

Strengthening industrial ties, Japanese company Terra Drone recently invested in Ukraine’s Amazing Drones to boost manufacturing of the Terra A-series interceptor drone, a platform actively employed against Russian Shahed attack drones. The collaboration leverages Ukraine’s operational expertise and production capacity alongside Japanese capital and international business networks.

Ukraine has also sought deeper technological cooperation with Japan, reportedly offering to share operational lessons and combat-tested solutions in drone warfare, counter-drone technologies, and air defense systems. Additionally, Japan has joined wider multinational efforts supporting Kyiv, including participation in a Latvia-led initiative aimed at providing drones, spare parts, and associated technologies to Ukrainian forces.
