The US Army has awarded Saab a $22.4 million contract for the delivery of Vehicle Tactical Engagement Simulation System (VTESS) base kits, reinforcing ongoing efforts to modernize military training and battlefield simulation environments.

The procurement forms part of the second lot under a broader long-term agreement valued at up to $60.8 million over a five-year period. The framework is intended to support the Army’s requirement for advanced and scalable combat training technologies.

Saab’s VTESS technology converts operational vehicles and weapon systems into interactive training assets through the installation of laser detector packages. The system can be fitted to a wide range of tactical and support platforms, allowing units to conduct realistic live training without altering existing equipment.

During exercises, VTESS records engagement outcomes such as hits, misses, vehicle manoeuvres, and simulated casualty effects. The collected data provides valuable insight for commanders and enables comprehensive post-exercise analysis to improve tactical performance and decision-making.

A key advantage of the system is its interoperability with the Army’s legacy TESS architecture. This compatibility allows VTESS to integrate with existing training networks while introducing enhanced capabilities for larger, more complex force-on-force training scenarios.
