HAL has initiated a new outsourcing effort for the Light Combat Helicopter (LCH) Prachand through a limited tender for precision-machined components, underscoring the company’s drive to expand manufacturing throughput amid rising production commitments. Issued under Tender Ref. LCHMSR-395/2/26, the project falls within the ALH outsourcing structure and is designed to bring qualified industry partners into the production chain while HAL maintains overall control of engineering standards and quality assurance.
The decision is closely tied to the substantial order backlog created by recent contracts for 156 additional Prachand helicopters. To meet delivery schedules efficiently, HAL is increasingly relying on external manufacturing support for specialized machining tasks, allowing multiple production activities to proceed simultaneously and reducing pressure on in-house facilities.
Work under the tender is expected to include CNC machining of critical structural components such as support frames, fittings, brackets, and airframe elements. Manufactured from aerospace-grade materials including titanium and aluminum alloys, these parts must meet rigorous aerospace standards due to the demanding operational requirements of a combat helicopter. Precision machining, metallurgical integrity, and comprehensive inspection processes remain essential throughout production.
The inclusion of the ALH-OS framework demonstrates HAL’s intention to utilize the mature industrial ecosystem developed for the Dhruv helicopter program. By applying existing vendor qualification procedures, documentation standards, and acceptance processes, the company can rapidly scale production without establishing an entirely new supplier network.
This production strategy allows HAL to focus internal resources on high-value activities such as helicopter integration, testing, certification, and delivery. At the same time, trusted industry partners can undertake recurring manufacturing tasks, improving overall efficiency and supporting sustained production over the life of the program.
Strategically, the tender highlights a broader transformation within India’s aerospace sector toward distributed manufacturing and deeper private-sector participation. Expanding the domestic supplier base for advanced helicopter programs strengthens long-term industrial capabilities while improving readiness for future procurement requirements, maintenance support, modernization efforts, and export-driven production growth.
