The Italian Navy has taken delivery of the upgraded “Tritone” multi-role support ship from Fincantieri at its Palermo facility. Engineered for underwater missions, the vessel incorporates improvements that enhance operational performance and enable full connectivity with naval command systems.
Tritone’s modular design allows it to support a wide range of payloads, including unmanned aerial, surface, and subsea systems, while remaining adaptable for future technological upgrades without major redesign. It will also play a key role in validating concepts and defining requirements for the next-generation UPSDS fleet, slated for introduction around 2031.
Fincantieri CEO Pierroberto Folgiero highlighted that integrating unmanned technologies into traditional naval platforms is essential as the underwater environment becomes increasingly complex and multi-domain in nature.
The delivery forms part of Fincantieri’s wider efforts to modernize the Italian Navy. Recent milestones include the launch of the Quirinale hydro-oceanographic vessel and the offshore patrol vessel Ugolino Vivaldi (P 440), alongside initiatives to strengthen cybersecurity across naval assets.
