China has imposed fresh sanctions on 20 US defense contractors, naming a Boeing unit and other major aerospace and defense firms, following the latest US arms sales to Taiwan.
Washington has historically been the primary supplier of military equipment to Taiwan, a self-governed island claimed by Beijing, which has not ruled out the use of force to assert control. This month, Taiwanese authorities confirmed US approval of approximately $11 billion in arms sales, one of the largest such packages in recent years.
Condemning the deal, China announced punitive measures against several companies, including Northrop Grumman and Boeing’s defense operations in St. Louis. Some of the sanctioned firms reportedly maintain minimal business ties with China and have previously been targeted by similar sanctions.
The measures include freezing any China-based assets of the companies and barring Chinese organizations from cooperating with them, reinforcing Beijing’s opposition to foreign arms transfers to Taiwan.
