The US Navy has awarded RTX subsidiary Pratt & Whitney a contract worth approximately $1.6 billion to support F135 engines, the powerplant of the F-35 Lightning II. The agreement includes recurring sustainment services, program oversight, propulsion integration, replenishment of spare parts, updates to Joint Technical Data, and other assistance at both unit-level and depot facilities.

The contract also covers training for personnel and operators to ensure proper handling, maintenance, and support of the complete F-35 propulsion system.

Most of the work—around 40 percent—will be carried out in East Hartford, Connecticut, with additional tasks performed in Oklahoma, Indiana, and Florida. International efforts will be distributed across Norway, the Netherlands, Japan, Australia, Italy, and the UK. All work is scheduled for completion by November 2026.

Pratt & Whitney is widely recognized for developing the F135 engine, as well as engines for aircraft such as the F-15 Eagle and C-17 Globemaster III, along with several US military helicopters. The company is also building a next-generation propulsion system for the US Air Force’s Collaborative Combat Aircraft program, which will pair uncrewed systems with manned jets. Additionally, it is advancing the XA103 adaptive engine using advanced digital engineering methods for the Air Force’s Next Generation Adaptive Propulsion effort.
