Rheinmetall has landed a significant contract from an undisclosed NATO ally for the procurement of several hundred HERO loitering munition systems. Production is set to begin shortly, with deliveries scheduled for early 2026. The deal, valued in the low three-digit-million-euro range, will be carried out by RWM Italia in collaboration with UVision Air. The order also includes Rheinmetall’s newest generation of anti-tank warheads, signaling strong NATO interest in enhanced precision-strike capabilities as modern battlefields increasingly rely on fast-reacting aerial weapons.

The HERO loitering munition family offers scalable capabilities for a wide range of missions. The lightweight HERO-30, designed for infantry units, provides rapid-launch precision effects for time-sensitive targets. Meanwhile, the larger HERO-120 and HERO-400 variants deliver longer-range performance against armored vehicles, fortified enemy positions, and fixed infrastructure. This flexibility has made the HERO series one of the most widely adopted loitering munition solutions among Western military forces seeking agile strike options.

Hungary has emerged as one of the most prominent customers in this domain. In 2023, Budapest placed a major order—also within the low three-digit-million-euro bracket—to integrate HERO systems with its newly acquired Lynx infantry fighting vehicles, enhancing the country’s mobile strike capability. By 2025, Hungary conducted the first public demonstration of the HERO-30, marking a key milestone in its broader defense modernization efforts and showcasing the growing importance of loitering munitions across NATO.

The new contract awarded to Rheinmetall further reinforces the rapid expansion of suicide drones and precision-guided loitering weapons within the alliance. As European militaries adapt to evolving threats, systems like HERO are becoming central to future combat strategies.
