Indonesia has taken delivery of its first A400M Atlas military transport aircraft at Halim Air Force Base in Jakarta, marking a major milestone in its airlift modernization program.

The aircraft is the first of two ordered under a 2021 contract that includes training and support services. The second unit is scheduled for delivery in 2026.

This delivery makes Indonesia the 10th global operator of the A400M and the second in Southeast Asia, following Malaysia.

Configured for cargo, troop transport, medical evacuation, and humanitarian missions, the A400M can carry up to 37 tonnes and operate from short, unpaved runways.

Airbus noted the aircraft can fly 2,400 nautical miles while transporting 30 tonnes, covering the entirety of Indonesia’s vast island chain.

Beyond its transport role, the A400M also serves as an aerial refuelling tanker. Indonesia is additionally exploring plans to equip it with a modular firefighting system that can release up to 20,000 liters of water or retardant in one sortie.
