The German Army has awarded General Dynamics European Land Systems (GDELS) a contract to supply Luchs 2 next-generation reconnaissance vehicles, strengthening its ground intelligence and surveillance capabilities.
Valued at €3 billion ($3.48 billion), the program covers 274 vehicles, to be delivered between 2029 and 2032, along with training gear, simulators, logistical support, and an option for 82 more units.
Developed from the Piranha 6×6 platform, the Luchs 2 replaces the Fennek light reconnaissance vehicle. The new amphibious vehicle offers enhanced mobility, advanced sensor networking, and reduced noise and heat signatures for improved stealth and survivability.
In parallel, Rheinmetall is expected to finalize an agreement to supply up to 310 KBA 25mm automatic cannons, capable of firing 600 rounds per minute and hitting targets up to 2.7 kilometers away.
The project also involves Hensoldt Optronics as the sensor provider, e.sigma for simulator systems, and Saab Bofors Dynamics Switzerland for camouflage solutions.
Weighing 25 tons and carrying a 7.5-ton payload, the Luchs 2 is optimized for long-range reconnaissance and medium fire support, delivering a significant leap in capability for Germany’s armored forces.
