Saab has been contracted by NATO to upgrade and extend the service life of the Arthur artillery-locating radar systems used by the Spanish Army, in a deal worth approximately 540 million Swedish kronor ($57 million).

The Arthur radar is a digital system for target acquisition, fire control, and counter-battery operations. The upgrade program will maintain Spain’s artillery-tracking capability while enhancing efficiency, mobility, detection range, and accuracy, enabling the radar to locate more targets at greater distances with a smaller electronic footprint.

Designed for rapid frontline deployment, the system can be set up or packed in under two minutes and operates with minimal crew. Its automation and vehicle compatibility allow it to function effectively in challenging combat conditions. The radar calculates enemy battery positions, tracks artillery in flight, and provides precise impact data to support counter-battery responses. Arthur is currently in service with 12 nations, including Norway, Sweden, South Korea, and the Czech Republic. Spain, Italy, and the UK also use the system, and Sweden recently committed five units to Ukraine as part of its 18th aid package.
