The Swedish Defence Materiel Administration has signed a $500 million (5.3 billion kronor) contract with Saab to deliver four Gripen jets to Thailand.
The deal covers three Gripen E models and one Gripen F, plus supporting equipment, training, and sustainment services, with deliveries scheduled from 2025 to 2030.
Thailand opted for the Gripen over the F-16 after a 10-month review, finalized in August 2024. The approval came earlier this month amid rising security concerns following deadly border clashes with Cambodia that killed over 40 people.
This acquisition is part of Thailand’s strategy to upgrade its air combat capabilities, complementing its existing fleet of 11 Gripen C/D fighters and aging F-16s from the 1980s.
