The Italian Army has received its first upgraded Ariete C2 main battle tank from the Iveco-Oto Melara (CIO) consortium at a formal event held at the Cecchignola military base near Rome.
This initial delivery is part of an ongoing program to modernize 90 Ariete tanks, aimed at improving battlefield performance through upgrades in mobility, firepower, and command systems.
Beyond the technological enhancements, the modernization comes with a comprehensive 10-year logistical support package, aligning with Italy’s overarching goal of rejuvenating its heavy armor units. The Ariete C2 enhances the C1 platform with a newly installed IVECO V-12 turbocharged diesel engine producing 1,500 horsepower — an increase of 20% over the original powertrain.
The platform rides on a refined suspension with seven road wheels and four return rollers per side, utilizing torsion bars complemented by hydraulic bumpers for more agile movement. A key feature in networked warfare, the tank incorporates Leonardo’s C2D/N EVO digital command system, with satellite-linked communications and a four-channel software-defined radio coupled to a modern intercom suite.
Advanced optics and targeting systems include thermal imagers and laser rangefinders for both the commander and gunner, supporting precision engagement at all times of day. A new onboard ballistic computer allows for accurate fire while the tank is in motion.
Primary weaponry includes a 120mm NATO-standard smoothbore cannon, with secondary arms comprising a coaxial 7.62mm machine gun and a 12.7mm turret-mounted system for close-range and anti-air defense roles.
