Lockheed Martin is investing millions of dollars to develop a Modular Payload Delivery System (MPDS) that could allow a single missile-body design to accommodate a range of offensive and defensive hypersonic payloads.
The program is intended to support efforts to increase hypersonic weapon production amid evolving security challenges. The ongoing conflict with Iran has further underscored concerns over US missile stockpiles and the ability of the defense industry to rapidly expand production.
The development also builds on Lockheed Martin’s collaboration with Albany Engineered Composites to accelerate hypersonic manufacturing through the use of advanced composite production methods.
Modular Payload Delivery System
Lockheed Martin says the MPDS will enable different payload configurations while requiring limited changes to the overall platform. The common hypersonic airframe could be adapted for missions such as long-range attacks, shorter-range operations with larger payloads, and missile-defense roles.
Based on flight-tested technologies, the system incorporates simplified integration processes and automated manufacturing. These capabilities could lower labor demands, improve production efficiency, and reduce delivery times.
