The US Army is preparing to invest $250 million to procure 50 additional Armored Multi-Purpose Vehicles (AMPVs) to replenish equipment stocks drawn down for Ukraine.
Inside Defense reported that, based on the Pentagon’s recently submitted reconciliation spending plan to Congress, a contract could be finalized as early as March. The AMPV, manufactured by BAE Systems, is intended to replace the long-serving M113 armored personnel carrier, a platform fielded since the 1960s.
Since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022, the United States has transferred at least 900 M113s to Ukraine, according to a January 2025 Defense Department fact sheet. Although the Army originally planned to purchase 38 additional AMPVs with the allocated funds, cost efficiencies allowed the procurement total to rise to 50 vehicles.
Program Details
Within Armored Brigade Combat Teams, the AMPV will substitute the M113 and make up roughly 30 percent of the unit’s tracked fleet, complementing the M2 Bradley and M1 Abrams.
The long-term objective of the program is to replace 2,897 M113 vehicles across brigade-level formations and below. This includes 522 general-purpose vehicles, 216 medical treatment variants, 790 medical evacuation models, 993 mission command versions, and 386 mortar carriers.
Low-rate production began in January 2019, and initial deliveries occurred in March 2023. In September 2023, BAE Systems received a $797-million contract for full-rate production, with the total potential value reaching $1.6 billion. Another contract worth $754.3 million was awarded on March 13, 2024, covering deliveries through February 2027.
Annual production is expected to ramp up to 131 vehicles starting in fiscal 2024 and remain at that pace through at least fiscal 2027.
Technical Specifications
Engineered to withstand contemporary battlefield threats such as top-attack munitions, loitering drones, and concentrated artillery fire, the AMPV can be equipped with a protected turret or remote weapon station mounting either a 12.7mm heavy machine gun or a Mk 19 40mm grenade launcher.
The vehicle incorporates an all-welded aluminum armor hull with blast-mitigating coatings on key surfaces. Built on the turretless chassis of the M2 Bradley, it measures about 6 meters in length and is powered by a 600-horsepower Cummins diesel engine.
The AMPV is capable of speeds above 60 kilometers per hour and offers a range exceeding 360 kilometers.
