UK Defence Medical Services has selected Avenue3 for a £2.5 million ($3.3 million) contract to implement Project Mercury, a secure digital health record solution for military clinicians operating in global and deployed environments.

The system is designed to allow medical professionals to view, update, and share patient records across multiple devices, even in locations where connectivity is limited or unavailable.

Avenue3, headquartered in Leeds, will work in partnership with UK and NATO clinicians to rapidly tailor the platform for operational use, ensuring it meets the evolving demands of military healthcare delivery.

By incorporating Near Field Communication technology—similar to contactless payment methods—Project Mercury supports offline data transfer, enabling clinicians to maintain accurate and current patient records in the field.

Having moved beyond the proof-of-concept phase, the program is scheduled to deliver its first live operational capability in Spring 2026, with phased enhancements and deployment continuing through 2027.

The initiative aligns with the UK’s ongoing investment in modernizing military healthcare systems. In 2022, Defence Medical Services launched a program to unify multiple health record systems into a single secure digital environment.

In 2023, the Ministry of Defence further advanced this effort by introducing digitally enabled field medical equipment capable of transmitting real-time vital signs from deployed forces to hospital facilities.

Meanwhile, Programme Cortisone remains underway, focused on creating a unified Healthcare Information Services ecosystem that supports both deployed and home-base operations, with features such as offline record access and interoperability across Defence Medical Services organizations.
