The Dutch Ministry of Defence has announced plans to expand its armored forces with the procurement of additional CV90 infantry fighting vehicles.

The acquisition will take place within a joint European framework alongside Estonia, Finland, Lithuania, Norway, and Sweden, reflecting a collective approach to procurement that emphasizes cost efficiency, common logistics, and operational interoperability. Specific details regarding quantities and timelines have not yet been released.

The newly acquired vehicles will equip an extra armored infantry battalion of the Royal Netherlands Army’s 13th Light Brigade, which is set to operate from Nassau-Dietz Barracks in Budel.

The decision follows a multinational agreement signed in November, under which participating countries committed to the shared development, operational use, and long-term maintenance of the CV90 family of vehicles. Finalization of the main contract is anticipated in early 2026.

Dutch industry is expected to play a significant role, with over 20 domestic companies participating as subcontractors, including activities linked to upgrading the Netherlands’ current CV90 fleet. At present, 122 CV90 IFVs are undergoing a mid-life modernization program valued at around $500 million, executed by BAE Systems Hägglunds.

The modernization effort includes improved armor protection, updated turret architecture, and enhanced crew interfaces, based on studies conducted by the Royal Netherlands Army to improve situational awareness and reaction times. The integration of an active protection system will further strengthen defenses against modern anti-tank weapons. Completion of the upgrade program is expected by 2026.

Designed for demanding operational environments, including subarctic terrain, the CV90 offers high tactical mobility and firepower. The vehicle can carry up to eight soldiers and achieve speeds of up to 70 km/h. The platform is currently in service with 10 countries, underscoring its status as a widely adopted European infantry fighting vehicle.
