RTX subsidiary Raytheon has won a $1.7 billion contract to deliver four Patriot air and missile defense systems to Spain, according to Reuters. The agreement reflects a broader push by European governments to strengthen air defense capabilities against an increasingly diverse range of threats, from ballistic and cruise missiles to coordinated, large-scale aerial attacks. Raytheon has framed the purchase as a matter of national readiness and sovereignty, structured as a U.S. Foreign Military Sales (FMS) case that also brings Spanish industry into the Patriot supply chain.

RTX stated that the package includes complete Patriot fire units, along with supporting elements such as radars, launchers, command-and-control stations, and training systems. The scope of the deal points to the delivery of an operationally complete capability rather than a partial acquisition. The company also highlighted the role of the GEM-T interceptor as a primary weapon within the Patriot system and linked Spanish industrial involvement to electro-mechanical control components of the missile. Although RTX did not disclose detailed system configurations, the mix of sensors, launchers, and command elements suggests a multi-layered architecture capable of countering a wide range of airborne threats.

Patriot’s combat pedigree continues to underpin its global demand. Reuters notes that the system, formally known as the Phased Array Tracking Radar for Intercept on Target, has long been the U.S. Army’s principal air and missile defense asset and has been deployed in theaters including the Middle East, South Korea, and Guam. RTX emphasizes that Patriot has successfully intercepted hundreds of threats and is now operated by 19 countries, a user base that enables interoperability, common upgrade paths, and a large sustainment ecosystem. The Spain deal also aligns with Raytheon’s broader strategy as part of RTX, highlighting continued investment in integrated air and missile defense systems, sensors, interceptors, and related technologies.
