Raytheon has secured a $168-million contract from Romania to supply key components for the country’s Patriot air and missile defense systems.

The deal covers the delivery of radar systems, command-and-control infrastructure, launchers, testing equipment, and long-term support services. It represents Romania’s second Patriot procurement from Raytheon this year, following an earlier agreement in April aimed at strengthening the nation’s multi-layered air defense capabilities.

Romania has contracted seven Patriot systems in total, with deliveries beginning in 2020 and scheduled to conclude by 2030. To date, four systems have been delivered, including one transferred to Ukraine as part of international military assistance in response to Russia’s invasion.

The Patriot system is a highly mobile air and missile defense platform combining advanced radars, antenna mast groups, engagement control stations, and launchers to counter aircraft, cruise missiles, and ballistic missile threats.

The system can engage targets at altitudes reaching 36,000 meters (118,110 feet), at speeds of up to 6,170 km/h (3,834 mph), and at ranges of up to 160 kilometers (99 miles).

Since entering service in the 1980s, Patriot has been continuously modernized to address emerging threats, with more than 1,100 systems produced worldwide. It is currently operated by 19 nations, including the United States.

Raytheon also expanded its Patriot portfolio in 2025 with new contracts awarded by Germany, Spain, and the Netherlands.
