The German government has awarded Patria contracts valued at more than €2 billion ($2.3 billion) for the procurement of 876 units of the Common Armored Vehicle System (CAVS).
The order spans four variants, including configurations equipped with Patria’s NEMO mortar turret and Kongsberg’s Protector RS4 remotely operated weapon station. Initial deliveries are set to commence in 2026.
The deal further formalizes Patria’s technology transfer to German defense firms FFG, JWT, and KNDS, following a 2024 industrial teaming agreement aimed at establishing domestic CAVS production capacity. Vehicles produced under this localized manufacturing effort are expected to be available from 2027.
Initiated by Finland’s Ministry of Defence in 2020, the CAVS program seeks to equip participating nations with a common next-generation armored vehicle fleet. The selected platform, Patria’s 6×6 armored personnel carrier, is designed for long-term service of up to 30 years.
Compliant with NATO standards, the vehicle is 8 meters long, supports a 9-ton payload, and accommodates up to 10 troops. It is powered by a 394-horsepower Scania diesel engine, enabling a maximum speed of 100 km/h and a range of approximately 700 km. Patria is currently fulfilling close to 2,000 CAVS orders, with more than 250 vehicles already delivered to customers. The program now counts seven member nations, with Germany joining as the fourth participant and the UK and Norway most recently entering the initiative.
