The US Army has taken delivery of two additional LOCUST directed-energy weapon systems from AeroVironment as part of its Army Multi-Purpose High Energy Laser (AMP-HEL) program.

Launched in 2023 through a contract with BlueHalo, an AeroVironment subsidiary, AMP-HEL focuses on developing laser-based air defense solutions to counter drone threats targeting small maneuver units.

The latest LOCUST units are mounted on Oshkosh Joint Light Tactical Vehicles and incorporate a 20-kilowatt laser paired with a larger aperture director, offering improved performance and lethality compared to earlier versions.

The handover builds on the Army’s acceptance of the first two LOCUST systems in September, which were also 20-kilowatt lasers but featured smaller directors and were integrated on GM Defense Infantry Squad Vehicles.

LOCUST employs multi-band radio-frequency sensors to detect, track, and engage unmanned aerial systems, safeguarding troops on the move. The platform provides full 360-degree coverage, with optional camera payloads to enhance situational awareness, and uses a high-power laser to destroy or disable hostile drones in flight.
