Denmark has selected Lockheed Martin’s TPY-4 long-range air surveillance radar to bolster airspace coverage across Skagen, Bornholm, and the Faroe Islands, strengthening both national and allied situational awareness.
The procurement includes three TPY-4 systems, with provisions for an additional unit, aimed at enhancing the capabilities of the Royal Danish Air Force and supporting NATO security operations. With a detection range of up to 1,000 kilometers, the radar will monitor airspace spanning the North Atlantic and Nordic regions, particularly between Iceland, Norway, and the UK.
To support the acquisition, the Danish parliament has earmarked 1.5 billion kroner ($236 million) as part of a wider defense modernization effort focused on improved surveillance and deterrence in the Arctic.
Designed for continuous, wide-area air surveillance, the TPY-4 radars will enable early detection and tracking of aerial threats. Systems deployed in Skagen and Bornholm will keep watch over Baltic Sea air activity, while the Faroe Islands installation will cover air corridors linking Iceland, Norway, and Britain—one of NATO’s most strategically sensitive regions.
