Australian defense manufacturer NIOA has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with European missile producer MBDA to establish production of the Mistral very short-range air defense (VSHORAD) system in Australia.

If implemented, the collaboration would make Australia the first nation outside France to manufacture the Mistral missile. The MoU covers joint exploration of local assembly, warhead production, and integration into MBDA’s global Mistral supply chain—strengthening both nations’ defense industrial bases.

The initiative aligns with the Australian government’s Defence Industry Development Strategy, promoting deeper collaboration with trusted allies while enhancing sovereign manufacturing capacity. For MBDA, it also represents an opportunity to expand global production, which has reportedly quadrupled to 40 missiles per month amid rising international demand.

In recent months, Romania ordered 300 man-portable Mistral 3 systems worth €626 million ($724 million), following a multinational framework agreement signed by Belgium, Cyprus, Estonia, Hungary, and France for joint acquisition.

Renowned for its versatility and precision, the Mistral is a multi-platform, fire-and-forget missile capable of intercepting aircraft, drones, cruise missiles, and even small surface vessels. The latest Mistral 3 variant has proven effective against low-observable drones and maritime targets during trials, offering an 8 km engagement range and a 6 km altitude ceiling with supersonic performance. MBDA states the system remains resistant to all known infrared countermeasures.
