Thales has received its 100th order for the Combined Active-Passive Towed Array Sonar (CAPTAS) system from a confidential client, underlining the global success of the company’s advanced anti-submarine warfare solutions.

Developed for long-range underwater surveillance, CAPTAS uses variable-depth technology to provide 360-degree active and passive coverage. It can detect submarines at distances of more than 60 kilometers, giving naval forces ample time to act before adversaries approach critical areas.

This capability offers a decisive early warning advantage, reinforcing maritime defense and fleet protection in both deep-sea and coastal environments. CAPTAS is now operational with 17 navies, including major operators such as France, Italy, the UK, and the US, as well as several NATO allies.

Versatile and Scalable Design
Engineered for flexibility, CAPTAS can be fitted on platforms from light corvettes to large destroyers, as well as support and unmanned surface ships. The system’s modular, containerized configuration enables quick installation or transfer between vessels.

It also integrates with other Thales maritime sensors — including Hull-Mounted Sonars, FLASH, and SonoFlash — to deliver a networked underwater surveillance capability.

Featuring a cyber-resilient modular design, CAPTAS is built to evolve with future technologies. Its use of artificial intelligence and advanced data processing improves situational awareness and decision-making efficiency while reducing crew workload and simplifying maintenance across its operational lifespan.
