The Portuguese Air Force has expanded its KC-390 Millennium fleet by signing an amendment with Embraer Defense & Security to acquire a sixth aircraft and secure purchase options for 10 additional units on behalf of NATO partners.
The new agreement builds on Portugal’s 2019 contract with the Brazilian aerospace firm, which aimed to replace its aging C-130 Hercules transport aircraft.
Lisbon currently fields two KC-390s, delivered in 2022 and 2024, while three more are expected under the original five-aircraft contract by 2027.
The 35-meter (115-foot) KC-390 is a versatile platform capable of troop and cargo transport, airdrops, medical evacuations, firefighting, search and rescue, and humanitarian relief operations. It carries up to 26,000 kilograms (57,320 pounds) of cargo or 80 troops and holds 35,000 kilograms (77,162 pounds) of fuel.
Powered by two IAE V2500-E5 turbofans, the aircraft achieves speeds over 500 knots (926 km/h/575 mph), operates up to 11,000 meters (36,089 feet), and has a range of 4,570 nautical miles (8,464 km/5,259 miles).
It can also be configured with an electronic warfare suite, self-protection systems, and countermeasures against missile threats.
Since its entry into service with Brazil in 2019, Portugal in 2023, and Hungary in 2024, the KC-390 has proven itself globally, with 11 air forces—including seven NATO members—selecting the aircraft.
