The Spanish government has approved the contracting process for Navantia to design and build two additional Buques de Acción Marítima (BAM)-class offshore patrol vessels for the Spanish Navy.
These vessels will join the six currently in service, enhancing maritime surveillance and security operations while supporting the readiness of the navy’s maritime action force.
The program, valued at €716 million ($847 million), incorporates upgrades over previous versions, including both operational improvements and better crew living conditions.
Engineering activities will commence after the contract is finalized, with production scheduled to begin in the first half of 2027. The new BAMs will feature an updated combat system, an advanced integrated platform management system, and upgraded communication and navigation suites.
Additional enhancements include unmanned vehicle integration, strengthened cybersecurity, modernized workspaces and medical facilities, and improved crew accommodations.
The project aims to bolster the navy’s ability to meet maritime security challenges while raising the quality of life for personnel onboard.
Construction will take place at Navantia’s Puerto Real shipyard, equipped with advanced automation technologies. For engineering, Navantia will apply its ELCANO program digital tools, developed with Siemens solutions.
