US Clears $97.3M Javelin Launcher Sale to Australia
The US State Department has approved a potential $97.3 million foreign military sale of more than 150 Javelin Lightweight Command Launch Units (LWCLU) and associated equipment to Australia.
Canberra has requested 161 launchers, training systems, spare parts, support equipment, and technical services. The approval has been forwarded to Congress for review.
According to the Defense Security Cooperation Agency, the deal will strengthen Australia’s surface-fired munitions capabilities and improve its deterrence posture against evolving threats.
The LWCLU is 30 percent smaller and 25 percent lighter than the current Block I model while offering double the target detection and recognition range. Its ergonomic redesign improves portability and soldier comfort in the field.
Compatible with all Javelin munitions, the system can engage targets up to 4 kilometers (2.48 miles)—a 60 percent increase over earlier variants—and remains effective in day or night operations, even in poor weather or through smoke screens.
