India is close to finalizing a major order for 400 Astra Mk-1 BVR air-to-air missiles, significantly boosting the Indian Air Force’s indigenous combat capabilities. Developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation and manufactured by Bharat Dynamics Limited, the missile is a key element in reducing reliance on imported weapon systems.

The Astra Mk-1, with a range of about 110 km, enables engagement of enemy aircraft beyond visual range, providing a critical edge in modern air combat. It is already operational on the Su-30MKI fleet and is being integrated with platforms such as the MiG-29K and Tejas Mk-1.

The upcoming deal builds on previous inductions exceeding 200 missiles across the IAF and Indian Navy. A ₹2,971 crore contract signed in 2022 initiated large-scale production, while subsequent approvals in 2024 expanded its deployment across multiple aircraft platforms.

Technologically, the Astra Mk-1 stands on par with contemporary global BVR systems, featuring an active radar seeker, high off-boresight capability, and strong resistance to electronic warfare. Its induction supports India’s broader goal of achieving self-reliance in critical defence technologies.

Overall, the expanded deployment of Astra Mk-1 will help standardize the IAF’s BVR arsenal with indigenous systems, ensuring operational flexibility and paving the way for next-generation variants like Astra Mk-2 and Mk-3.
