The Spanish Air and Space Force has received its first Airbus A400M Atlas outfitted with Indra’s InShield directed infrared countermeasures system, marking a milestone in fleet protection upgrades.

The aircraft was modified by Airbus to accommodate the DIRCM suite and was delivered during a ceremony at the company’s San Pablo final assembly facility in Seville.

An operational evaluation will now follow, shaping Madrid’s decision on whether to expand InShield integration across its A400M fleet. Spain has procured 27 aircraft from Airbus, with 14 already in service.

Indra’s Air Dominance Director, Miguel García Moreno, underscored the defense ministry’s role in supporting the system’s development, noting its contribution to strengthening Spain’s defense-industrial independence.

The InShield system combines rapid response times with high-accuracy tracking, enabling it to engage multiple infrared-guided missile threats at once. By calculating incoming missile paths, it employs a directed laser to jam or deflect hostile seekers.

Designed as a modular solution, InShield can be fitted to multiple aircraft types, including the A400M, CH-47, and NH-90. The system was tested and technically assessed with support from PLATIN and the Air and Space Force’s Electronic Warfare Operational Support Squadron, and has successfully completed environmental and live-fire validation trials.
