AM General has secured an $82.2-million contract from the US Army to supply additional High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicles (HMMWVs), or Humvees. The firm-fixed-price, indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity agreement raises the total cumulative value of the contract to $754.6 million.

Funding and work locations will be specified with each individual order, while all work is expected to be completed by August 31, 2028.

Although the US Army is introducing newer platforms to take over some HMMWV missions, it continues to procure the vehicles for ongoing requirements. In September 2025, the service issued AM General a $50.9-million contract modification covering 224 Humvees. This followed a $126.5-million order placed in July for M1165A1B3 vehicles.

AM General has been associated with the HMMWV program since 1983, when it received its first Army production contract for 55,000 vehicles. More than 280,000 Humvees had been manufactured by 2012.

Modernizing the Vehicle Fleet

As part of its modernization strategy, the Army awarded AM General an $8.66-billion Joint Light Tactical Vehicle follow-on production contract in 2023. The agreement could cover up to 20,682 vehicles and 9,883 trailers, while the initial contract award was valued at $230.8 million.

The Army is also evaluating commercial vehicle-based solutions for lower-risk and non-combat roles. Proposed concepts include the Commercial Utility Cargo Vehicle and Light Service Support Vehicle, which could provide lower-cost alternatives, though neither program has been formally adopted as a program of record.

For some infantry formations, the lighter Infantry Squad Vehicle is also taking over roles traditionally performed by the Humvee, offering improved rapid mobility for troops.

About the Humvee

Since entering service in the 1980s, the Humvee has evolved through numerous upgrades to meet changing military requirements. The 4×4 vehicle can carry as many as six personnel and reach a length of approximately 15 feet (5 meters), depending on the variant.

It can support multiple weapon configurations, including 40-millimeter grenade launchers, .50-caliber and 7.62-millimeter machine guns, as well as anti-tank missile launchers.

A 190-horsepower Detroit Diesel V8 engine and four-speed automatic transmission provide the Humvee with a maximum range of up to 350 miles (563 kilometers) and a top speed of more than 70 mph (113 km/h).
