A NATO Airborne Early Warning and Control System (AWACS) aircraft has completed its first operational mission within Finnish airspace, marking an important step in the alliance’s air surveillance activities in the region.

The sortie supported NATO’s monitoring and command-and-control operations in the High North and along the alliance’s eastern flank. The mission was organized by Joint Force Command Norfolk and carried out under the direction of NATO Allied Air Command.

Eight Finnish F/A-18 fighter jets took part in the exercise, flying a four-versus-four training scenario guided by the AWACS platform. During the operation, the aircraft functioned as an airborne battle management center, supervising the exercise and coordinating the tactical air picture.

AWACS platforms enhance interoperability by connecting airborne sensors with national command centers, giving military leaders a real-time view of air activity across wide areas and enabling coordinated responses to emerging threats.

The aircraft operated in Finland’s civilian-managed airspace during the mission, maintaining close coordination and shared procedures between NATO military units and national air traffic authorities.

Operations were conducted in cooperation with the Control and Reporting Centre in Rovaniemi in northern Finland and the Air Operations Centre in Jyväskylä, which manages air operations in the central part of the country.
