Poland has finalized a $4.8 billion defense contract with Sweden for the procurement of three Saab submarines, a key step in strengthening the Polish Navy as regional security challenges continue to grow. Deliveries will begin in 2031, with the final submarine entering service in 2038 under the country’s Orka submarine acquisition program.

To bridge the capability gap, Sweden will loan Poland a refurbished A-17-class submarine from next year for sailor training. Beyond the submarine acquisition, the agreement covers logistics, operational assistance, infrastructure upgrades, and industrial collaboration, while Sweden will procure a Polish-built rescue vessel. The landmark deal is projected to create 7,000 jobs in Poland and numerous positions in Sweden. Saab was chosen over competing bids from Germany, Spain, Italy, South Korea, and France’s Naval Group.
