Reuters has reported that Czech defense group CSG is attempting to obtain a stake in Franco-German defense manufacturer KNDS.

According to the report, CSG recently held discussions with KNDS’ German family shareholders regarding a potential investment in the company, which is known for producing the Leopard tank and Caesar artillery platform.

However, sources cited by Reuters indicated that the shareholders are currently prioritizing plans for a future public listing as well as a possible stake sale to the German government.

Berlin is reportedly considering purchasing between 30 and 40 percent of KNDS before any potential IPO takes place.

KNDS was established through the merger of German defense company Krauss-Maffei Wegmann and French manufacturer Nexter. Ownership remains evenly divided between the French state and German family investors.

Reuters stated that a future stock market listing could place KNDS’ valuation at nearly 20 billion euros ($23 billion).

The reported investment effort comes during a difficult period for CSG, which launched its own IPO earlier this year. The company has since experienced a sharp decline in market value amid weaker defense-sector stock performance and questions regarding production capacity.

Neither company has publicly confirmed or commented on the reported talks.

Broader Trend of Defense Sector Expansion

The reported KNDS approach reflects ongoing consolidation activity within the defense industry, where companies continue pursuing acquisitions and strategic partnerships.

In April, KNDS France finalized its acquisition of Texelis Defense, integrating the company under the new KNDS Mobility brand to expand capabilities in mobility and drivetrain systems for military vehicles.

Meanwhile, Leonardo acquired Iveco Group’s defense operations in March through a 1.6-billion-euro ($1.8 billion) transaction, and AeroVironment purchased drone manufacturer Empirical Systems Aerospace for approximately $200 million.

Earlier in the year, Elbit Systems UK strengthened its presence in Europe and NATO markets through the acquisition of UAV Tactical Systems.
