Teledyne Marine’s Gavia business unit has handed over the first batch of four GAVIA AUVs to Sweden’s Defence Materiel Administration under a long-term framework agreement.
The program supports the Swedish Armed Forces’ efforts to modernize their naval fleet and expand autonomous underwater capabilities, with the initial delivery completed ahead of schedule and within budget. The vehicles’ modular architecture enables rapid adaptation for roles such as mine warfare and undersea intelligence gathering.
As part of the agreement, Teledyne has partnered with FLIR Sweden to establish an in-country service and support concept, ensuring sustainment and operational readiness throughout the system’s lifecycle.
The GAVIA AUV is a compact, fully modular system designed for multi-mission use with minimal logistical demands. It can be deployed by a two-person team from shore or non-specialized vessels, allowing flexible operations without dedicated launch infrastructure.
Depending on the configuration, GAVIA measures between 1.8 and 4.5 meters in length and weighs 50 to 130 kilograms. It is capable of diving to depths of up to 1,000 meters and achieving speeds of more than 5.5 knots.
The system is powered by swappable lithium-ion battery modules, offering 7 to 8 hours of endurance at cruising speed per battery, with capacity for up to three batteries to extend mission duration. Currently operated by 18 navies—including numerous NATO and allied forces—the GAVIA has a proven track record in challenging maritime environments, including the Baltic region.
