The UK Ministry of Defence has selected Frankenberg Technologies, Greenjets, and Cambridge Aerospace to develop next-generation low-cost drone interceptors through contracts totaling £3.14 million ($4.22 million) under the Low Cost Air Defence Effectors (LCADE) program. The project focuses on creating economical interceptor solutions capable of countering large numbers of low-cost drones, offering a more affordable alternative to traditional air defense systems when facing mass drone attacks. The initiative is designed to enhance the UK’s air defense capabilities by accelerating technological innovation, improving procurement timelines, and expanding cooperation with industry and allied nations.
As part of the program, all three companies have committed to increasing their manufacturing footprint in the UK, supporting employment and industrial growth across SMEs in Cambridge, Milton Keynes, Bristol, and Stevenage. LCADE contributes to the wider Low Cost Effectors and Autonomous Platforms (LEAP) program, which unites the UK with Poland, France, Italy, and Germany to develop affordable autonomous systems and effectors. Following individual national competitions, the participating countries will enter a collaborative multinational phase to strengthen Europe’s defense manufacturing ecosystem. Inspired by Ukraine’s wartime experience in rapidly scaling drone and autonomous weapons production, LEAP emphasizes AI integration, rapid development cycles, adaptable technologies, and cost-effective interception, with full-scale production expected to begin in 2027.
