Ashok Leyland is preparing to transform its defence mobility business by accelerating the development of advanced technologies for military vehicles. As India’s second-largest commercial vehicle manufacturer and the world’s fourth-largest bus maker, the company is focusing on modernizing its flagship platforms to meet the evolving operational requirements of the Indian Armed Forces.
Highlighting the company’s future plans, Amandeep Singh, President – Defence Business, stated that Ashok Leyland is working with Vehicle Factory Jabalpur (VFJ) to introduce a hydrogen engine option for its Stallion vehicle family. The project is intended to support India’s push toward alternative propulsion systems for defence applications while reducing reliance on traditional fossil-fuel-powered military vehicles.
The hydrogen initiative builds on Ashok Leyland’s expertise in electric mobility, compressed natural gas (CNG), and liquefied natural gas (LNG) technologies, allowing the company to develop flexible multi-fuel platforms capable of operating across a wide range of military environments, from mountainous border areas to desert battlefields.
With defence forces increasingly seeking autonomous and environmentally sustainable mobility solutions, Ashok Leyland’s advancements in hydrogen-powered and autonomous Stallion vehicles represent a significant step toward next-generation military transportation. The programmes are expected to contribute to India’s indigenous defence manufacturing ambitions and establish new benchmarks in smart, sustainable military mobility.
