As part of its new Defense Investment Plan, the UK will introduce six Common Combat Vessels (CCVs) to replace the Royal Navy’s Type 45 Daring-class destroyers, abandoning earlier plans to develop the Type 83 class. Expected to enter operational service in the early 2030s, the next-generation ships will be built to command and coordinate unmanned air, surface, and underwater systems.

The program marks a shift toward a hybrid naval force that combines crewed warships with autonomous capabilities, reducing dependence on expensive, large-scale platforms. Acting as command centers for multi-domain drone operations, the CCVs will strengthen air defense and extend the Royal Navy’s operational reach while minimizing additional crew and lifecycle costs. The vessels will be integrated with Type 26 and Type 31 frigates and supported by autonomous assets including the Type 91, Type 92, Type 93, and Type 94 systems. The modernization effort also underpins the UK’s Atlantic Bastion, Atlantic Shield, and Atlantic Strike initiatives, enhancing NATO’s maritime posture, safeguarding critical undersea infrastructure, and addressing increased Russian naval activity in the North Atlantic and High North.
