The Indian Army has issued a detailed technology roadmap defining its future needs for unmanned aerial systems (UAS) and loitering munitions. The nearly 50-page document outlines around 30 different system types across five categories of drones, as reported by local sources.

The initiative aims to align operational requirements with technological innovation, while encouraging greater involvement from domestic manufacturers, startups, and academic research institutions.

Drawing on insights from recent conflicts, the roadmap emphasizes the evolving role of UAS in reshaping battlefield dynamics and accelerating the adoption of autonomous systems. It offers a clear and actionable framework to guide developers toward key operational priorities.

The proposed systems span multiple roles, including surveillance, strike operations, air defense, special missions, and logistical support. It also highlights the need for platforms capable of reconnaissance, electronic warfare, and extended-range supply operations.

Maj. Gen. CS Mann, Additional Director General of the Army Design Bureau, described the roadmap as the first instance of the Army publicly sharing detailed requirements in this field, reflecting the increasing importance of unmanned technologies.

Separately, Lt. Gen. Rahul Singh, Deputy Chief of Army Staff, stressed the document’s sensitive nature and warned against unauthorized distribution, citing potential risks if accessed by adversaries.
