Germany has committed €1.2 billion to acquire 84 RCH 155 8×8 wheeled howitzers, reinforcing its artillery modernization strategy and expanding its long-range, high-mobility fire support capabilities.

The order was placed with Artec, the KNDS Germany–Rheinmetall joint venture, under an existing framework contract that enables the procurement of up to 500 RCH 155 systems for Germany and potential partner nations. The program is managed through Germany’s Federal Office of Equipment, IT, and In-Service Support.

Rheinmetall will deliver the artillery gun modules, electrical systems, and software, while Artec will oversee system integration, training assets, and sustainment. Deliveries are planned between 2027 and 2029.

The RCH 155 pairs a remote-controlled, fully automated 155mm gun with the Boxer wheeled platform, offering a combination of protection, strategic mobility, and rapid fire capability. Capable of firing on the move, the system achieves effective ranges of up to 40 km, while its automation allows operations with a two-person crew, enhancing survivability and deployment speed.

Already in service or on order beyond Germany, the RCH 155 has emerged as a preferred wheeled artillery solution for NATO and allied forces. Ukraine became the system’s first export customer with an order for 54 units, supported by Rheinmetall’s provision of key subsystems. The system has also been selected by Switzerland to replace aging artillery assets, while the UK and Germany announced a bilateral cooperation framework in 2024 covering potential British adoption.
