Germany has taken another step to reinforce its ground forces by issuing Rheinmetall a fresh, high-value order for 120mm tank ammunition under its long-standing procurement framework.
The latest batch, worth several hundred million euros, will add both combat and training rounds to the Bundeswehr’s growing ammunition reserves as Berlin responds to a more unpredictable European security environment.
The effort to rebuild stocks accelerated after July 2023, when Germany renewed Rheinmetall’s framework contract and increased its cap to about four billion euros ($4.6 billion).
Set to run until 2030, the agreement allows Germany to procure several hundred thousand 120mm x 570 cartridges compatible with the Leopard 2’s smoothbore gun.
Germany’s renewed focus on operational readiness and force modernization has generated a consistent flow of Rheinmetall contracts across multiple capability areas.
One major award was for Lynx KF41 infantry fighting vehicles, part of Berlin’s strategy to overhaul its mechanized units.
The company also received a significant contract for Skyranger 30 short-range air defense systems, aimed at countering drones and low-flying threats — a priority shaped by recent conflict dynamics.
Rheinmetall has further been tasked with providing new 155mm artillery ammunition, including extended-range variants to replenish stockpiles reduced by deliveries to Ukraine.
Additional procurements have covered HX tactical logistics trucks, upgrades to Puma IFVs, and digital soldier systems within Germany’s modernization and rearmament framework.
