Amid growing global demand for air and missile defense systems, RTX is investing $100 million to expand operations at its Raytheon facility in Portsmouth, Rhode Island. The project is aimed at increasing the site’s capacity to test the Lower Tier Air and Missile Defense Sensor (LTAMDS) radar while also boosting production of key components for the Patriot Guidance Enhanced Missile-Tactical (GEM-T) interceptor.
The upgraded facility will play a larger role in supporting LTAMDS, an advanced radar designed to identify and track emerging threats, including hypersonic weapons. The system is already being supplied to both the US Army and Poland under existing contracts. In addition, the expansion will strengthen manufacturing capabilities for Patriot PAC-2 GEM-T missile components, supporting air defense operations against aircraft, cruise missiles, and tactical ballistic missile threats.
RTX’s move is part of a wider wave of investments across the US defense industry aimed at increasing production capacity and strengthening supply chains. In June, L3Harris Technologies announced a $25 million expansion of its Alabama operations to support solid rocket motor manufacturing. Similar initiatives include Rajant’s plans to expand defense and aerospace production in Kentucky, Ultra Maritime’s growth of its naval radar manufacturing footprint in North Carolina, and BAE Systems’ $135 million investment to upgrade facilities in Texas and New Hampshire in support of military readiness and increased output.
