Washington has approved a potential $292 million sale of AIM-120C-8 AMRAAM missiles to South Korea under the US Foreign Military Sales program. Seoul’s request covers 70 missiles and two guidance sections, along with transport containers, spare components, and a range of support and sustainment services.
The US government stated that the package will help strengthen South Korea’s defensive capabilities, improve its ability to deter regional threats, and ensure continued operational compatibility with US forces. RTX will serve as the principal supplier for the proposed sale.
The authorization comes shortly after the United States approved South Korea’s request for Joint Direct Attack Munitions in a separate deal valued at $106 million.
As the export configuration of the AIM-120 AMRAAM family, the AIM-120C-8 provides beyond-visual-range engagement capability and employs fire-and-forget guidance technology. Manufactured by RTX, the missile is designed to operate effectively in all weather conditions and can target enemy aircraft, cruise missiles, and drones during both daytime and nighttime operations.
South Korea can deploy the missile from its F-35A stealth fighters and F-15K Slam Eagle combat aircraft. The AIM-120C-8 has also been adopted by several US allies across the Asia-Pacific region, including Japan and Singapore, reflecting its widespread use among allied air forces.
