South Korea has unveiled plans to invest approximately 50 billion won ($36 million) in a new AI defense robotics innovation cluster that will unite government, academia, defense companies, and the armed forces to fast-track the development and operational deployment of advanced military robotics. The initiative is being implemented by South Chungcheong Province, the Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA), and the city of Nonsan.
The cluster aims to establish a comprehensive defense innovation ecosystem where artificial intelligence technologies can be efficiently developed, tested, validated, and transitioned into military service, reinforcing the country’s expanding K-Defense capabilities.
As part of the program, dedicated facilities for research, demonstrations, and technology verification will be built alongside a 45,000-square-meter testing site in Nonsan for evaluating AI-enabled robotic platforms under operational conditions. The hub will also help defense startups and commercial technology firms adapt their innovations for military applications.
Running through 2031, the project is expected to boost South Korea’s defense AI sector while generating around 509 billion won ($368 million) in economic value. It builds on several national AI initiatives, including the Add+i secure AI research platform, the sovereign AI collaboration between Naver and Korea Aerospace Industries, and Hyundai Rotem’s ongoing development of AI-powered military robotic systems.
