General Dynamics Mission Systems has secured a $55 million contract from the US Navy to upgrade the AN/BYG-1 submarine combat control system, aimed at strengthening tactical capabilities across the fleet.

The contract encompasses system design, development, integration, testing, and delivery, with work to be conducted in Manassas, Virginia, and completion expected by July 2027.

As a critical element of submarine operations, the AN/BYG-1 provides a digital framework that integrates sensors, weapons, and navigation systems, enabling real-time decision-making in undersea combat scenarios.

Enhancements under the program will improve system performance, ensure greater interoperability, and support the integration of future technologies. The upgrade is intended to keep US submarines operationally effective in increasingly challenging maritime environments.

This initiative forms part of the Navy’s broader modernization strategy for undersea warfare systems. In March, Lockheed Martin was awarded a $478 million contract to produce and sustain submarine imaging systems, improving detection and tracking capabilities as well as underwater data processing.

In the same month, L3Harris Technologies received a contract to deliver Torpedo Tube Launch and Recovery systems, enabling submarines to deploy and recover autonomous underwater vehicles without the need to surface.

Further demonstrating industry progress, Ultra Maritime presented next-generation sonar and unmanned sensing technologies in February, including lightweight sonar solutions for rapid detection and extended-range monitoring.
