Germany has awarded a contract to Quantum Systems for the delivery of 15,000 Strila interceptor drones, produced in Ukraine, to the National Guard of Ukraine to enhance its defenses against Russian drone incursions.

In addition to the supply of drones, the agreement encompasses personnel training, logistics assistance, and further advancement of unmanned aerial capabilities.

The development follows Quantum Systems’ strategic investment in WIY Drones, the company behind the Strila system. Manufacturing will be scaled through joint efforts, with initial expansion focused in Ukraine to meet urgent battlefield demand, while excess production may be directed toward export markets.

Strila System Overview

The Strila interceptor is described as a rocket-style air-defense solution specifically engineered to counter high-speed and highly maneuverable aerial threats.

It is designed to engage loitering munitions such as the Shahed-136 and Shahed-131, in addition to other attack and surveillance UAVs.

The system prioritizes fast engagement, high-precision interception, and effectiveness against small, agile targets that can be difficult for traditional air-defense platforms to neutralize.

Powered by a four-motor configuration, the interceptor can surpass speeds of 350 kilometers per hour (217 mph). It offers a tactical operating range of 14 kilometers (8.7 miles), extendable up to 28 kilometers (17 miles), with a service ceiling of 4 kilometers (2.48 miles).

Its latest iteration features resistance to GPS jamming, the ability to switch communication channels mid-flight, and upgraded day/night optical systems for improved tracking accuracy.

Production has rapidly increased, with daily output reaching approximately 100 units. Deliveries are ongoing, and the unit cost has been reduced to around $2,300 as of early 2026, making it an efficient and economical option for counter-UAV operations.
