Northrop Grumman and Boeing have demonstrated a new level of automated crewed-uncrewed collaboration by successfully connecting the MQ-4C Triton drone with the crewed P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft.

Funded jointly by the two companies, the technology demonstration allowed the autonomous Triton and piloted Poseidon to share maritime intelligence using a standardized machine-to-machine interface. The system combined artificial intelligence (AI) with an open systems architecture to support automated information exchange between the platforms.

During the test, the high-altitude, long-endurance Triton employed AI-based algorithms to interpret and respond to a request issued by the P-8A. The capability is designed to strengthen automated interoperability for maritime intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, targeting, and anti-surface warfare operations.

Enhancing Interoperability

The demonstration used the Universal Command and Control Interface, a standardized protocol for machine-to-machine collaboration built around the Open Mission Systems and Autonomy – Government Reference Architecture.

The interface allows Triton to share mission information with a wider range of compatible systems, rather than being limited to the P-8A. This open approach could help operators integrate additional platforms more quickly while lowering the cost and effort associated with system integration.

The demonstration underscores the companies’ ongoing efforts to develop advanced technologies that can provide military forces with an operational edge as maritime threats continue to evolve.

The MQ-4C Triton is currently operated by the US Navy and Royal Australian Air Force and has also been considered for potential NATO acquisition.
