Uralvagonzavod has indicated its readiness to partner with India on the development of a next-generation combat tank, according to CEO Alexander Potapov. The proposal comes as the Indian military explores advanced armored vehicle concepts for future battlefield requirements.
In comments to RIA Novosti, Potapov said Russia is open to collaborating on new armored platforms and believes both countries can identify a common path toward developing a future tank solution that meets India’s operational needs.
The initiative would build upon a long-standing defense relationship that has seen India manufacture over 1,600 T-90 Bhishma tanks under license. Uralvagonzavod has remained a key supplier and technology partner for the Indian Army’s armored forces, supporting both production and upgrade programs.
A potential future tank program could integrate cutting-edge technologies such as advanced active protection systems, AI-assisted fire control, unmanned turret designs, improved situational awareness, high mobility, and autonomous operating features. These capabilities reflect evolving global trends in armored warfare and lessons learned from modern combat environments.
The collaboration would also complement India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat strategy by encouraging local production, technology transfer, and indigenous industrial participation. It aligns closely with the Indian Army’s Future Ready Combat Vehicle (FRCV) requirement, which seeks a modern replacement for legacy armored platforms.
The proposal underscores ongoing defense-industrial cooperation between India and Russia despite New Delhi’s efforts to diversify procurement sources. By combining Russian experience in heavy armor with Indian advances in electronics and digital systems, a joint next-generation tank could deliver a capable and cost-effective solution while creating opportunities for future exports and international partnerships.
