The United Kingdom is strengthening the British Army’s long-range precision strike capabilities by joining the US Army’s Precision Strike Missile (PrSM) program.

Under the government’s 298-billion-pound ($398 billion) Defence Investment Plan, 190 million pounds ($254 million) has been earmarked for the acquisition of the ballistic missiles. The PrSM currently offers a range of up to 500 kilometers (311 miles), with planned upgrades expected to increase its operational reach.

Developed by Lockheed Martin, the missile is fully interoperable with the UK’s upgraded M270A2 Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS). The British Army received its first modernized launcher in March 2026, with the remaining upgraded systems expected to enter service by 2029.

Initial deliveries of the PrSM could begin in 2027, adding a new long-range surface-to-surface strike capability alongside the Army’s one-way attack drones and ground-launched cruise missiles.

The UK’s entry into the PrSM program also strengthens cooperation under the AUKUS security partnership involving the United States, Australia, and the United Kingdom. The investment aligns with AUKUS Pillar 2, which promotes collaboration on advanced defense technologies, including artificial intelligence, quantum computing, autonomous underwater vehicles, and intelligence integration.

According to the UK government, the PrSM will serve as an additional capability rather than replacing existing collaborative missile projects. Britain will continue developing its long-range deep precision strike weapon with Germany, designed to engage targets at distances of up to 2,000 kilometers (1,243 miles). The country is also working with France and Italy on the Stratus missile program, which will replace the Storm Shadow and further expand the UK’s long-range strike arsenal.
