MBDA and Poland’s Military Institute of Armament Technology (WITU) have signed an agreement to cooperate on missile research and development under the Counter Mass Interceptor (CMI) program.
The memorandum of understanding (MoU), signed during the MSPO 2026 defense exhibition in Poland, establishes a framework for developing a fully Polish-designed missile that can be produced at low cost and in large quantities. The system is intended to provide European allies with an affordable capability to counter threats including drones, helicopters, and cruise missiles.
As part of the collaboration, MBDA and WITU conducted a series of field trials earlier this month to evaluate the seeker’s performance against several representative drone targets at a Polish test range.
Following the successful completion of these trials, the seeker is set to be integrated into a prototype missile developed by WITU. Additional development and testing will continue, with the first missile firing campaign scheduled for 2027.
Counter Mass Interceptor
Weighing approximately 53 kilograms (117 pounds), the CMI is a supersonic interceptor missile that was unveiled at the Farnborough International Airshow in July.
MBDA stated that MBDA UK will lead the program’s initial development phase. Future production is expected to be undertaken by MBDA or potentially through cooperation with industrial partners.
