The US Department of Defense has launched an initiative to establish 50 mobile secure facilities across the country, aiming to give more companies access to classified defense work.
Led by the Office of Industrial Base Growth in partnership with the Space Development Agency, the Secure Space Network will deploy mobile Sensitive Compartmented Information Facilities (SCIFs) equipped to handle highly classified information.
SCIFs are accredited spaces designed to protect classified information from unauthorized access. However, building a permanent facility can be costly and time-consuming, particularly for small businesses and companies seeking to enter the defense market.
According to the department, the initiative is intended to help more companies transition from unclassified cooperation to classified development and production, while strengthening competition across the US defense industrial base.
Expanding Access to Classified Work
The mobile units will be positioned at military installations, industry support centers, and other locations connected to defense development and production.
The network will provide an alternative for authorized suppliers that possess relevant technologies but lack secure infrastructure of their own. This will allow them to collaborate directly with government teams, develop advanced capabilities, and compete for classified defense contracts.
The initiative will combine rapidly deployable units with fixed facilities that provide longer-term capacity. Washington also plans to establish a repeatable production process, enabling additional secure workspaces to be manufactured and deployed as demand grows.
